Why did you choose this job?
Attracted to the sense of responsibility and accomplishment
After graduating from high school, I had planned to study mechanical engineering at university, but as I thought about my career path, I became interested in the idea of a university that trains pilots, so I looked into it and was drawn in by its appeal. Taking care of our customers’ lives and delivering them to their destinations also means that we are delivering their thoughts and feelings. I thought that although the responsibility was heavy, the sense of accomplishment must be great, so I decided to make being a pilot my life’s work.
Of all the other airlines out there, I decided on Peach because I heard the phrase “aiming to become Asia’s leading LCC” at the company information session, and that gave me the feeling that Peach is a company that will grow rapidly in the future. I decided to work for Peach because it looked to be an environment with lots of room for growth, and I could take on challenges and grow together with the company.
Please describe your work and tell us about its appeals and challenges.
The moment at the end of the rigorous training when dreams come true
After I started working for Peach, I was trained at the office and at the airport, and then I underwent training to get promoted to co-pilot. In addition to classroom study, there was flight training using a simulator and also with actual aircraft. Performing all of the necessary operations was rather difficult, and I felt that there was a gap between my abilities and the level I needed to be at to become a co-pilot. After that, there was a period of on-the-job training on actual flights. I was so preoccupied with everything in front of me that I couldn’t pay attention to my surroundings, and I realized how demanding the job was.
It was the presence of my colleagues that helped me get through those tough training days. After the end of each training session, I was able to discuss ideas and exchange opinions with my colleagues, who have different ways of thinking, about what we did and didn’t do, and that helped me make positive progress toward improvement.
I completed my training and got promoted to co-pilot in April 2023. It wasn’t an easy road, but the dream that I had since high school finally came true, and I felt an inexpressible sense of accomplishment.
My first flight as a co-pilot was a round-trip route to and from Okinawa. I invited my family to take the flight, and after the flight, my mother burst into tears of joy. My heart was filled with gratitude that I was able to show some filial piety.
Becoming a beloved captain who keeps his passengers safe
Since I became a co-pilot, I feel that my responsibilities have suddenly become much heavier. There’s a sense of tension that I feel every day since we’re being entrusted with the lives of our passengers, but I’m also committed to carrying out the things I’ve learned so far one at a time, while also maintaining good communication with the captain.
In addition to ensuring the safety of the flights, it’s also important that we keep them running on time and that our passengers have a comfortable flight. During the flight, we always have to think about the appropriate altitude and speed while also making sure to fulfill our three goals of safety, punctuality, and comfort.
Of course, I feel a sense of tension having to do all of these things, but I also enjoy the work I do every day. When I’m in the cockpit flying the plane, I can see a cloudless, blue sky spreading out in front of me. Seeing that spectacular view right before your eyes is one of the perks of being a pilot.
I will continue to do my best as a pilot who keeps his passengers safe. Doing so will require me to actively communicate with staff members and I aim to become a beloved captain that my crew feels comfortable consulting with.
What are the things that are necessary for a Peach person?
Staying updated on a daily basis
Peach is a dynamic company that is still growing, so information about our work is constantly being updated and the situation is always in flux. In an environment like this, there are experienced colleagues working in different languages and cultures, so it’s important to be flexible and keep yourself updated with things according to the situation. I think that the key to growing naturally with the company is not limiting yourself to just your own knowledge and experience, but communicating with many different people and absorbing their experience as well.
